Toothbrush selection

How to choose a sonic toothbrush?

First, a sonic toothbrush should be selected on the basis of our individual needs. Therefore, the choice should be preceded by the analysis of our oral cavity and a reflection what effects we would like to achieve by using the toothbrush.

Our initial thought should be whether we have problems with hypersensitivity, gum inflammations, increased accumulation of caries or other dangerous illnesses of the oral cavity. By answering those questions it will be much easier to make the right choice.

When facing the choice of the product, one also has to consider the device’s parameters – the speed, available modes, functions, amenities and battery capacity. All of these options significantly facilitate the daily hygiene of the oral cavity, making it more comfortable and effective.

For example, persons that have problems with intensified plaque accumulation or discolorations should look for a device with appropriate modes and one with sonic vibrations in the range between 80000 and 96000 vibrations per minute. Persons with hypersensitivities or inflammations should particularly focus on products offering modes that are used for delicate cleansing of the oral cavity and gum massage.

When looking for a single sonic toothbrush for a few persons, it is worth searching for a model with many functions and modes.

A sonic or electric toothbrush?

It all depends on our individual preferences. It is worth highlighting that advanced electric toothbrushes (especially those that use 3D technology) do not differ significantly in terms of effectiveness from sonic models. Presently, the only differences between these two types of devices refer to the head types, modes and the maximum possible speed.

Electric toothbrushes in the standard version have a round head and are capable of rotation with the maximum speed of 8800 per minute, and they can perform pulsating movements with the speed of 40000 per minute. The removal of sediment, plaque and discolorations happens mechanically, which is much more effective than using manual toothbrushes.

Sonic toothbrushes have an elongated head, similar to the one in traditional toothbrushes. To clean teeth, they apply ultrasounds, which can emit the frequency of as many as 96000 vibrations per minute. They operate using toothpaste and our saliva, thanks to which micro bubbles are formed in our oral cavity that effectively eliminate bacteria. Sonic toothbrushes make sweeping movements recommended by dentists and they can make even 48000 of such movements per minute.

Due to the applied technology, sonic toothbrushes are usually a bit more expensive than electric toothbrushes, but this is not a rule. The most advanced Oral-B rotation devices are priced as high as the most expensive sonic toothbrushes.

It is hard to clearly predict which product will be better for us. Both electric and sonic toothbrushes are able to thoroughly clean the oral cavity, significantly improving the state of teeth and gums. When facing the choice of a toothbrush, we should think which modes fit us best, and which device has bristles that are friendlier to our oral cavity.

Who can use a sonic toothbrush?

Sonic toothbrushes function non-invasively and are completely safe. Because of that, they can be used by anyone, including children (over 3 years of age), the elderly and persons with dental braces, bridges or prosthetics. People with gum hypersensitivities or missing teeth can also use sonic toothbrushes with no problems.

Specialists agree that sonic toothbrushes are currently the most effective devices used for the daily care of the oral cavity. They are also the safest. All because they were designed with the aim of supporting every group of people. For instance, sonic devices for children are equipped with heads that have more delicate bristles, ensuring better cleaning of milk teeth and improvement of the blood vessels of children’s sensitive gums. On the other hand, products dedicated to users of orthodontic braces, bridges or prosthetics have heads with longer bristles that allow the toothbrush to effectively clean prosthetic elements, guaranteeing thorough protection against daily sediments.

The market is full of various heads for sonic devices that are dedicated specifically to selected groups of people. Because of that, sonic toothbrushes can be recommended to anyone dreaming of a healthy and beautiful smile.

What sonic toothbrush should I choose for a child?

Nowadays, the market offers many sonic toothbrushes designed with children in mind. They are characterised by a significantly lower number of vibrations per minute, more delicate bristles and numerous functions facilitating the hygiene of children’s oral cavity. In this context, it is worth to mention a special timer, which monitors the appropriate time of brushing so that we can be sure that our young one cleans teeth correctly. Another pleasant aspect is how colourful the devices can be – with handles representing cartoon characters or melodies played when brushing.

When selecting a product for our child, we should consider whether the specific sonic brush has an appropriately small head, soft bristles, and if it is equipped with all of the abovementioned amenities. It is also worth consulting the little one before purchasing so that the child gets a toothbrush he or she likes. It is common knowledge that children more eagerly brush teeth every day if the device looks attractive to them.

Sonic toothbrushes can be used by children over 3 years of age. If our child is mature enough to consciously brush teeth, it is worth to purchase a sonic toothbrush as it is a completely safe and effective device.

The use of the toothbrush

How does a sonic toothbrush work?

Sonic toothbrushes operate by emitting sound waves, which make the bristles of the device move in a sweeping manner, as recommended by dentists. On the technical side, this process looks as follows: the bristles of the device are stimulated to vibrate by a special motor, which makes sound waves disperse in liquid combined from water and saliva. Microbubbles are formed this way, effectively cleaning every area of the oral cavity, eliminating bacteria, dental plaque and other daily sediments.

Thanks to their special profiling and sweeping movements recommended by specialists, sonic toothbrushes are nowadays considered as the most advanced devices for the daily hygiene of the oral cavity. They can move with the speed from 31000 movements per minute to even 96000 in the case of the newest models. This ultimately makes them the fastest devices on the market.

Thanks to the newest technological advancements, sonic toothbrushes are safe and easy to use. Everybody can use them – children, the elderly, users of orthodontic braces, bridges or crowns, as well as consumers who are missing some teeth or have problems with hypersensitivity.

How to brush teeth with a sonic toothbrush?

The way you use a sonic toothbrush is the same as the recommended methods for an electric, rotating toothbrush.

First of all, we have to remember that before cleaning the oral cavity, we should make sure the product is charged – otherwise, the device will not fulfil its function properly, and will become a simple, manual toothbrush.

Just before brushing, we have to soak the head of the sonic toothbrush, and then apply a small amount of toothpaste (the best kind is with a low degree of abrasion/RDA – Relative dentin abrasivity, so we can be sure we will not irritate our enamel). The device should be switched on only when the toothbrush is already in our mouth, otherwise the paste might drop from the bristles.

When brushing, the device should be held at a 45-degree angle, the same as when using a manual toothbrush. Remember to clean every area of the oral cavity, 30-second brushing for each part. The whole brushing process should last 2 minutes, as recommended by dentists, and the time will be tracked by a timer, which is installed in every sonic device.

After the brushing is finished, it is worth to remove the head of the toothbrush and clean it with running water. When the product is dry, it should be attached once again on the handle and put in the charger.

To support the daily care of the oral cavity, it is recommended to first rinse teeth with water, and then using a special liquid for rinsing the mouth.

How often do you have to replace old heads with new ones?

It is recommended to replace old heads every three months. However, it is worth to remember that the bristles of the head should be immediately replaced if there is any deformation – all because deformed bristles lose their properties. The heads should also be replaced after we recover from cold or flu because the illnesses may leave bacteria on the product and have a negative influence not only on the health of our oral cavity, but also our health in general.

Luckily, nowadays most heads for sonic toothbrushes are equipped with a special indicator of bristle wear, thanks to which we do not have to keep track of the moment we should replace the old head with a new one – the head loses its colour after being used for a period of time, which is a clear sign that a replacement is needed.

What toothpaste should be used with a sonic toothbrush?

Honestly, there is no argument against using traditional toothpaste that we are already familiar with. However, the toothpaste should have low RDA (Relative dentin abrasivity) index due to the high speed of sonic devices and the enamel’s susceptibility to mechanical damage. It is worth to look for toothpastes that replace calcium carbonate with, e.g. delicate forms of silica.

We should also make sure that the toothpaste for our sonic device is a bit more dense than the traditional one. This will prevent the toothpaste from losing grip of the head, which has a significant impact on the cleaning performance. The toothpaste should not have constituents causing a lot of foam, as this may negatively affect the comfort of cleaning and make us finish the process earlier than recommended.

Nowadays, the market is full of toothpastes for sonic devices and if we are not sure whether our product is good for such a device, toothpaste designed especially for sonic toothbrushes will always be a good and safe choice.
